MACON, Ga. -- After looking at all the finalized recruiting classes from yesterday's National Signing Day, 247 Sports ranked Mercer's 2018 class as the second best in the Southern Conference and the ninth best in the FCS.

Mercer's class is headlined by four 3-star players -- WR DeMond Ellison, WR Tony Jones Jr., QB Bryce Lawrence, and TE Brandon Shelnutt.

The class has 17 total committed players, with 14 of them coming from the state of Georgia.

Head coach Bobby Lamb says that taking advantage of the talent pool in the state of Georgia was a big priority for his coaching staff.

"We want to protect home turf, first of all," Lamb said. "We felt like we did a great job at that this year. That gives us a foothold in the state of Georgia as we continue to recruit, even into next year."

Coach Lamb also went on to say that these incoming freshmen could be called upon to play and contribute immediately.

"Well, we recruit and we tell them, 'We're going to play the best players,'" Lamb said. "They've basically got 8 weeks (of pre-season camp) to prove themselves, to get on the field in that first game. If they're the better player, they're gonna play."

Mercer kicks off its 2018 season on Sep. 1 on the road against Memphis.
