Mercer Softball splits DH with #5 Georgia
The Mercer Softball team had a historic afternoon in Athens, Georgia on Saturday. The Bears split a double header with #5 Georgia. This was the first win in 19 attempts against the Bulldogs. The Bears have now knocked off a top 25 opponent in 3 straight seasons. Mercer is now 27-13 on the season.
In game one, Megan Lane started off the scoring for Mercer with a solo home run. After the Bulldogs picked up 2 in the bottom of the 2nd, Caroline Taylor tied the game at 2 in the top of the 6th with a solo home run. This would go into extras where Mercer took over. They got a RBI triple from Shailia Warren, another run from a error, and a RBI single from Laurenne Sanchez to pick up the 5-2 extra innings win. Stella Preston (9-3) picked up the win going 2 and two thirds innings.
In game two, Mercer got off to a hot start. The Bears scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st off a error and a 3 run homer from Emma Andrew. The Bulldogs would answer with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st. They would add another in the 2nd to tie the game at 4. Georgia would break it open in the bottom of the 4th scoring 3 runs. UGA would go onto win 7-5. Mary Wilson Avant (4-1) picked up the win going the distance while giving up 5 runs off of 6 hits.
Up next, the rubber match between the two will be at 2 pm on Sunday.
