Mercer WBB sinks Florida
It was a night to remember for the Mercer Women's Basketball team on Thursday. The Bears unveiled their new banners for winning the Southern Conference and making it to the NCAA Tournament, and they knocked off a SEC foe in the process. The Bears jumped out to a 21 point lead in the 2nd half, and had to withstand a late Gator charge as Mercer knocked off Florida 92-82. The Bears are now 2-1 on the season.
Mercer was led by KeKe Calloway who had 30 points and 10 assists for her first career double double. Shannon Titus had a career high 17 points going 7 of 11 from the field. Amanda Thompson chipped in with 14 points and 4 steals, and Linnea Rosendal had 16 points.
The Gators were led by Delicia Washington who had 33 points and 6 rebounds. Funda Nakkasoglu had 23. Florida now drops to 0-3.
The Bears dominated in almost every category on Thursday. The won the rebounding battle (32-28). They forced 15 turnovers and got 22 points off of those. They got 12 fast break points, and outscored the Gators in the paint 24-18. Mercer shot 62.5 percent from the field in the 1st half, and 53.8 percent for the game. "We jumped on them early and shot the ball exceptionally well from the beginning. There was a great intensity the building" said head coach Susie Garnder. "I thought our bench was outstanding. We had 4 in double figures scoring. Obviously KeKe shot the ball great, double double but 10 assists for KeKe and the night that she had. Great Great win for our program tonight." "To get this win was really big. Out there building chemistry and we really gelled well tonight really well. We played hard, we played with passion, and we came out with the win" said senior Keke Calloway.
Up next, the Bears will host Central Florida on Sunday. Tipoff will be at 2 pm.
