ATHENS, Ga. -- Macon County alum and current Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith was named the winner of the Butkus Award on Sunday night.

The Butkus Award is given to the nation's best linebacker every year. The Montezuma native is the team's leading tackler with 113 and also has 10.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks.

Smith was named the MVP of the SEC Championship game on Saturday thanks to a season-high 13 tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.

Smith, a junior, is projected to be a first-round draft pick should he decide to leave school early and enter the NFL draft.
