MACON, GA -- If asked at the beginning of the season, not many people would have said 'yes' to the thought of Howard making it to the playoffs.

The postseason is here and the Huskies are one of 32 AAAA teams vying for a state championship. Friday night marks Howard's first ever postseason game and it's a game they deserve to be in.

At 6-4, the Huskies fell victim to crazy circumstances the last two weeks including a fire against Spalding at Henderson Stadium on Oct. 27. After a one-point loss to the Jaguars, Howard nearly slayed the region dragon in Mary Persons falling 17-14 a week ago.

The Huskies enter the tournament the fourth seed out of the region earning a first-round matchup with Americus Sumter. Local coaching legend Barney Hester says don't let the seed or the record dissuade from this team's talent.

"We're actually four points away from being a region champion and a #1 seed," Hester said. "Our guys realize we're right there. We just haven't quite broken through that barrier yet that we need to break through to get to that next level."

After a string of disappointing seasons including a 1-9 finish in 2016, Husky seniors say Friday night's opportunity is special.

"I've been here since I was a freshman and I experienced the losses and not going to the playoffs," Senior Defensive Tackle Quentavious Morant said. "It means so much."

Howard and Americus Sumter kickoff action at 7:30 p.m Friday.
