WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- In last weekend's region tournament, the Warner Robins Demons basketball team won the Region 1 AAAAA title for the fifth straight year. Now, they're prepping for a run at something they've never accomplished; winning a state title.

Despite some deep runs in past year, the Demons have never hoisted up a state championship trophy in program history. Their first round matchup on Friday against Ware County is the first step towards changing that.

Warner Robins finished the season undefeated in region play (10-0) and 23-3 overall. Those three losses came to Upson-Lee, a team that hasn't lost a game since Feb. 2016, Gainesville, a 6-A team that's top-20 in the state of Georgia, and Newton, the No. 4 team in the state with the top college prospect in Ashton Hagans. To put it simply, the Demons have faced an incredibly challenging non-region schedule this year.

Head coach Jamal Garman says that strength of schedule has prepared his team for this point in the season.

"We're finally at the part of the season we've been waiting on," Garman said. "We've been working, hard, scheduling tough games to be ready for this part of the season. Just ready to see what we're going to do."

For the 10 seniors on this roster, this is the last chance they'll have to win a state title for the city of Warner Robins.

"We try not to speak on it too much," senior Champ Dawson said. "But it'd be big for our fans, for our school, for our city, and for each other. We really just want to prove to each other that we can do it."

Warner Robins kicks off its playoff run on Friday at 6:00 p.m. when the Demons welcome Ware County into Warner Robins.
