Veterans baseball advances to Elite Eight with 5-2 win over Whitewater
KATHLEEN, Ga. -- Just as they did in the first round of the GHSA state playoffs, the Veterans Warhawks found themselves in a hole in the Sweet Sixteen after dropping game one against Whitewater.
They responded by winning game two 10-6, and winning game three 5-2 at home to advance to the Elite Eight.
Matthew Nunez delivered the big blow for Veterans at the plate in game three, bringing home three runners in the bottom of the fifth inning with a bases-loaded double. He was also the only Warhawk to turn in a multi-hit performance in this elimination game.
Derek Wylie got the nod as the starting pitcher in this do-or-die game three, and the senior did not disappoint on the mound. Wylie finished with 5.1 innings pitched, allowing one unearned run and striking out eight Wildcats to earn the win.
Veterans will face Flowery Branch in the state quarterfinals next week. The series starts with a doubleheader May 9, with game three (if necessary) on May 10. Game times have not yet been announced.
