DURHAM, Nc. (WGXA) - A college basketball player from Macon has died unexpectedly in North Carolina.
Devin Butts, a Macon native and graduate of Stratford Academy, passed away Friday. Butts played basketball for North Carolina Central University.
“We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Devin. This is a devastating tragedy for our team, fans, and the entire NCCU community,” said NCCU men’s basketball head coach LeVelle Moton. “Devin will always be remembered as an incredible teammate that had an infectious smile at all times. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family and those who were blessed to know him.”
According to school officials, Butts was on track to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Behavioral and Social Sciences this summer.
Butts averaged 5.4 points in 17 appearances this past season for the Eagles.
Butts previously played for New Mexico Junior College, Louisiana, and Mississippi State, prior to transferring to North Carolina Central University.
During his time at Stratford Academy, Butts was a two-time all-state selection and was rated a three-star prospect, setting a single-season school record with 28 points per game as a senior.
No cause of death has been provided.
Butts was 22 years old.
